Witnessing change

This year I will join a crew to start the most challenging adventure of my life: circumnavigating the world in the Clipper 2023-24 Round the World Yacht Race.
The part of the Clipper Race that I am most excited about is not a single moment, but the accumulation of life changing small moments that will alter me and my life forever. I know today that the Dianne McGrath who will complete the Clipper Race as a circumnavigator will be a totally different person than the woman who is sitting in her comfortable apartment typing this today.
As well as participating in a remarkable event that will take almost 11 months to complete, this will be an opportunity to witness the health of our oceans, and see what people from across the globe are doing to protect it through taking small steps at the local level. I plan to share what I experience here and on social media.
Why do we need to protect our oceans?
They are our future.
Our oceans absorb 25% of all carbon emitted – but that means our oceans must be healthy to be able to do that
Our oceans feed us. They provide 17% of the animal protein we eat globally. Sadly over 800 marine species are affected by ocean plastics and other marine debris
Our oceans are our livelihoods. More than 3 billion people rely on the ocean for their jobs.
We need healthy oceans to survive.

However, a lot of us can’t see the state of our oceans first-hand, or may not know what we can do to help, or if our actions are enough. As part of a crew in the Clipper 2023-24 Round the World Yacht Race, I’ll be crossing every ocean – and sharing the view. And in the ports we stop at, I want to display and show support for the small steps that we can all take – everywhere around the world - that can help protect our oceans.
